If VT is becoming more selective on its out-of-state applicants

than how can we be sure it is because of the ACC vs. VT moving up the academic rankings? It is possible the ACC's academic rankings improved because of its ACC membership. Likewise, it is possible VT's academic rankings would have improved regardless of athletic conference membership(s).

I guess my point is when looking at whatever data, how can anyone say with any certainty (i.e. at least 90%) that VT's increase in academic prestige is directly due to its athletic membership in the ACC. Also, I am reminded of what happened at George Mason while I was at VT ('96-'00). When I was applying for college, GMU was viewed as a "safety school" at my high school. When I graduated from VT and a few years after, GMU was no longer a "safety school" because of the huge improvements it made in academics (i.e. business and law). GMU went from being a high tier three school to a low tier one/high tier two. From what I have gathered in talking with people, it sounds like GMU has continued that upward trend to where it is has shifted more to a tier one school and less from a tier one/tier two hybrid school.
